“There are more dogs than children in the San Francisco Bay Area.”
The Internet
I guess if I read it on the Internet, it must be true, right?
Welcome to my blog! My name is Karla Orduña and I am a 30 year-old Bay Area resident. As most of the humans that reside in this technology hub of Northern California, I’m not a native. I was born and raised in Mexico City where I grew up eating spicy food and complaining about traffic. A little over 5 years ago I got married and moved to Ohio. Being the weak, wimpy, warm-blooded Latina that I am…I couldn’t handle Ohio winters. Why is my passing through the Midwest important? Well, the one thing that got me through it all was my dog-child, Mocha.

I want to add here that my husband is the freaking best. He’s fun, he’s smart, he’s hard-working and he is my best (human) friend but ,no, he didn’t get me through the winters all by himself. More importantly, this blog is not for “wives of the Bay Area”.
Fast forward to January of 2019 and we moved to California, where every millennial seems to be getting married (or not), not being able to afford a house and raising a dog-child. Enjoying the California sunshine with Mocha still by my side (and hubs) I realized how many of us ADORE having our dog children with us, everywhere. Which is why I decided to create this blog.
This blog serves two main purposes:
- Become a portfolio for my work in my COM561 course at Washington State University.
- Create and consolidate a definitive guide to dog parents of the Bay Area. (I am hoping once the class ends I can keep this blog and grow a community of dog-human families.)
A little more about me, other than I am completely in love with my dog:
- I majored in International Relations because I wanted to work for the United Nations and change the world, achieving world-peace eventually.
- I still want to change the world but in a different way. So yes, I am an idealist. I believe in the good of people and particularly dog-people.
- I love being outdoors, as long as there’s a flushing toilet nearby.
- I am an amateur baker and hoping to become a British citizen just so I can participate in the Great British Baking Show. (Kidding on the British citizenship. I couldn’t take Mocha but seriously, I am a great baker.)
- I love traveling and if traveling was free (and dog friendly), my family would never see me and Mocha again
My goal is to become a successful communications professional that can create compelling, captivating stories. Not only do I want to grow a community here but I want to be able to take that knowledge and apply it to my professional career as a member of the communications team.
Enough about me and welcome! Bienvenidos and let’s build a community of families where the most important member is a tail-wagging bundle of love. Let this be the destination for all your dog-friendly needs in the Bay Area where we’ll include topics such as:
- Best dog friendly restaurants
- Best hikes for our doggies
- Favorite beaches
- Dog Friendly Events
- Tips and tricks on how to be the best dog parent you can be
I’m looking forward to building this community.
Wags and kisses,
Mocha’s mom, Karla O.
